Представить такое советскому человеку было сложно, но одна техническая ошибка на декадно-шаговой телефонной станции в Ленинграде стала прообразом первой социальной сети.
Феноменальная случайность
Явление, позже получившее название «Эфир», возникло в Ленинграде в начале 1980-ых годов. Инженеры Автоматической телефонной станции спустя много лет обнаружили причину возникновения «телефонного эфира»: при определенном положении шагового искателя можно позвонить на несуществующий номер стационарного телефона. Несколько человек могли одновременно попасть на одну линию и разговаривать друг с другом. Существует предположение, что первооткрывателями «эфира» были ленинградские фарцовщики, нелегальные торговцы зарубежными дефицитами. Однако открытая сеть была ненадежна для переговоров спекулянтов, поэтому быстро отошла в пользование к молодому поколению.
Комментарий бывшего эфирщика Влада Вовка: «Я об этом узнал в Сайгоне (кафе на углу Невского и Владимирского проспекта, место неформальных тусовок 1970-80-х годов, ныне несуществующее), это была модная тема, все это обсуждали и меня это тоже заинтересовало. Я приехал домой и набрал заветный номер телефона».
Своя атмосфера
«Эфир» существовал более 20 лет. Идея анонимного бесплатного общения в стране с жестким социальным строем оказалась привлекательной. После 22:00 заканчивалось теле- и радиовещание, пойти было некуда. «Эфир» же был круглосуточным местом для знакомств и обсуждения того, что интересовало молодежь, например, музыка или литература.
Эфирщики существовали под выдуманными именами или прозвищами, выстраивали образы, линию поведения и даже имели отличительный знак в виде двухкопеечной монеты на леске. Со временем появились «короли эфира», яркие личности, которые задавали тему дня, и даже сформировался свой кодекс. Самое популярное правило гласило: сквернословие запрещено! Если человек нарушал эту заповедь, с ним больше не разговаривали.
Голь на выдумки хитра
С технической точки зрения «Эфир» был неидеален. Приходилось десятки раз набирать заветный номер, чтобы соединение установилось. Но еще сложнее было расслышать друг друга из-за треска и гудков. Передовые эфирщики создали усилитель звука, состоящий из платы и еще нескольких деталей. Это устройство подключалось к микрофону телефонной трубки.
До середины 1980-тых годов для инженеров телефонной станции оставалось загадкой частая перегруженность телефонной сети, на которую оборудование не было рассчитано. Слухи о «телефонном эфире» дошли до телефонистов, и первый несуществующий номер был заблокирован. Но ему на замену пришли новые номера, вычисленные молодыми сотрудниками АТС. Благодаря сарафанному радио «Телефонный эфир» продолжил работу.

Место встречи изменить нельзя
Продолжительное общение в «телефонном эфире» постепенно переходило в реальную жизнь. «Забить стрелку» на сленге эфирщиков означало оффлайн встречу, а официальным местом сбора сообщества стал «паровозик у Финляндского вокзала». Люди общались часами напролет, собирались в группы по интересам, обменивались пластинками и книгами. Случались и выяснения отношений между участниками «эфира», встречи, бывало, заканчивались потасовками.
Комментарий бывшего эфирщика Алексея Назарова: «Был такой в «эфире» «Динамит», все про него говорили, что жуткий хулиган, что все его боялись. И он как-то приехал на стрелку с компанией, стоял в стороне, потом он с кем-то успел сцепиться, пока мы отходили. Мы смелые, тоже собрали компанию, и пошли разбираться, но разборки не получилось, он сбежал».
След в истории
Для молодежи того времени «эфир» был значимым событием. Принадлежность к субкультуре отметало чувство одиночества. Среди единомышленников завязывалась дружба, строились отношения и даже семьи.
Комментарий бывшей эфирщицы Лики Бруевой: «Сначала просто на стрелке друг друга видели, через некоторое время подруга напомнила, что был там такой молодой человек, я позвонила, познакомились, несколько раз встретились, потом решили пожениться. 17 лет прожили, двое детей».
В массовой культуре это явление оставило след. Например, в 1987 году режиссер Арон Каневский снял документальный фильм «Что могут короли?», где поднимается проблема городского одиночества среди молодежи и объясняется, почему «эфир» важен для них. Писатель Александр Житинский в своей повести «Старичок с большой Пушкарской» знакомит главных героев через «эфир».
После распада СССР общество поменялось, на место привычных стационарных телефонов пришли новые технологии, позже появился Интернет. «Телефонный эфир» остался в 20-ом веке. Его пытался взять под контроль комсомол, а инженеры АТС — закрыть навсегда, но только время смогло заглушить шум голосов в телефонной трубке.
