Размышления над рассказом А. Н.Толстого «Гадюка»
Чтобы понять произведение во всей его глубине, надо любить писателя и знать эпоху, о которой он пишет. А как его не любить? У Алексея Николаевича Толстого было жизнелюбивое сердце, богатая, щедрая и яркая душа, острый ум, блестящий самобытный талант. Все, кто его знал, приходили от него в изумление. Он был «русский из русских». Толстой вступил в литературу с большим запасом неистраченной душевной чистоты, которой хватило ему до конца дней. Как писатель, он никогда не был спокоен, всегда находился в движении. Оказывается, в первую мировую войну он был специальным корреспондентом на Волыни, в Галиции, в Карпатах, а в пятнадцатом году на Кавказе. Потом в Испании, в траншеях под Мадридом. В отечественную войну (уже больной) был в комиссии по расследованию зверств фашистов.
У писателя был большой масштаб. Он сочинял романы, повести, рассказы, сказки, драмы, комедии, киносценарии, писал памфлеты и статьи о литературе, театре, кино, музыке. Знаю точно, что в Толстом сочеталось самое великое искусство человека— жить, творить, нести людям счастье. В Алексее Николаевиче весьма тесно переплетались живая впечатлительность, повышенная эмоциональность, интерес к искусству и вместе с тем общественное, гражданское сознание, мучительные раздумья о том, куда идет современное человечество. Отсюда глубокий интерес Толстого к истории русского народа. Его волновали эпохи, где, как он считал, завязывался характер народа: это эпоха Смутного времени, время Петра Первого («Петр Первый»), гражданская война 1918-1922 годов (трилогия «Хождение по мукам»), увиденная глазами русского интеллигента, который чутко откликается на все, что происходит вокруг, который знает, что гражданская война- это самое страшное зло, которое может обрушиться на страну. Писатель обратился к проблеме личности, ее возможности сопротивления среде, жизненным обстоятельствам.

Писатель понимал всю трагедию происходившего в России. И об этом рассказ «Гадюка». Всего лишь рассказ? Но острый сюжетный рассказ, по мнению Толстого, может с наибольшей силой и яркостью отразить явление сегодняшнего дня, да так, чтобы через частное увидеть общее, через эпизод понять жизнь.
Рассказ читается в один присест: нельзя оторваться, настолько слажен, гармоничен его строй. А начинается повествование неторопливо, даже буднично: «Когда появлялась Ольга Вячеславовна, в ситцевом халатике, непричесанная и мрачная, — на кухне все замолкали…» Писатель как бы не допускает авторского вмешательства в текст, стоит в стороне от событий, которые изображаются им, предоставляя своим героям говорить за него. И мы хорошо представляем себе главную героиню, хотя описание ее очень скупое: темноволосая, стриженая голова, плечи, как у подростка, цыганское худое лицо, красивые и сильные ноги, тело стройное, смуглое, золотистого оттенка, талия тонкая, как у осы. Но примечательны детали: «на ляжке у нее длинный поперечный рубец, на спине, выше лопатки, розово-блестящее углубление- выходной след пули, на правой руке у плеча- татуировка. Представляем и портниху Марью Афанасьевну, «всеми печенками ненавидевшую Ольгу Вячеславовну», Розу Абрамовну Безикович, которая «буквально чувствовала себя худо при виде Ольги Вячеславовны», и Соню Варенцову, или Лялечку, «премиленькую девицу, служившую в Махорочном тресте». А как выразителен осмотр ее комнаты в замочную скважину, который не удовлетворил их любопытство, так как обстановка была очень аскетичной. Но авторское примечание значительно: «только револьверчик над кроватью». Вот их вердикт: «это какой -то демобилизованный солдат; ну разве это женщина?» А вот тут они правы. Ольга Вячеславовна действительно служила в армии и была демобилизована .

Хронологическая точность повествования введена Толстым, я думаю, намеренно: «Часы-ходики на кухне показывали девять». Следующий абзац начинается так же, как бы уверяя нас в достоверности событий: «В девять часов вечера в отделение милиции стремительно вошла женщина». В ее руке маленький револьвер. Она сказала тихо, но с отчаяньем: «Там я натворила… и сама не знаю что… Я сейчас должна умереть …»
Дальше композиция строится как рассказ в рассказе. Такая же точная хронология: «Десять лет тому назад в Казани загорелся среди бела дня на Проломной дом купца второй гильдии, старообрядца Вячеслава Илларионовича Зотова.» Бандиты оставили два трупа и бесчувственное тело их дочери Ольги Вячеславовны, семнадцатилетней гимназистки. Писатель не скрывает: «Россию раздирала гражданская война, прочное житье трещало и разваливалось…» Выжившую Ольгу Вячеславовну обуял страх, «как теперь жить», и отчаяние перед неизвестным. Как подлинный художник, Толстой видел то, что другие не замечали: огромные перемены за короткий срок в образе жизни и мыслей миллионов людей. Ведь после распада прежнего тысячелетнего порядка, где был авторитет Бога, царя, сословной морали, человек, освобожденный от социальных, бытовых, религиозных обязательств, переживает то, что Александр Блок назвал «свободой без креста». Так среди бандитов был гимназист Валька, с которым она танцевала на вечере. Они убили родителей, а с дочерью не справились. Писатель скупо об этом говорит, но все равно виден сильный характер девушки: «все вокруг указывало на отчаянную борьбу». Потом не раз будет Ольга Вячеславовна вспоминать этот страшный день и гирьку на ремешке, которой ее «пристукнули». Но в госпитале, где она все же выжила, произошла встреча, которая ее взволновала: «чем-то этот сероглазый стал близок». Потом он ее спас, когда расстрелянная в тюрьме она опять осталась жива. Тут впервые прозвучало это слово: «Живучи вы, Ольга Вячеславовна, как гадюка…» Еще бы. Два раза убивали – не убили, и теперь она ничего не боялась. В ее жизнь вошел он, «веселый, страшноглазый».
Гражданская война родила новых героев, смелых, отчаянных, бесшабашных. Их вдохновляла революционная эйфория, надежда на новое общество без царя: «По всему миру собираемся на конях пройти.» И он так картинно описывал кавалерийские сражения, «что жутко было глядеть в его ястребиные глаза»: «Несется лава на лаву без выстрела…у меня за плечами крылья… Сшиблись… Сердце не выдерживает этого ужаса…» Ольга Вячеславовна, горячо полюбив этого человека, ругала себя: «Счастья ждала, ленивая дура, в капоте, за кофейником!..» И она не пошла за ним, а полетела. Оказалось, что «в слабой девочке таились железные силы». Даже конь смирно ходил под ней. Обучилась владеть клинком и была зачислена бойцом в эскадрон Емельянова. Теперь она ничего не боялась, хотя командир обращался с ней сурово. И однажды, когда Зотова везла пакет в дивизию, бесстрашно сразила своего смертельного врага Вальку Брыкина и второго всадника. И хотя в разговорах с ней Дмитрий Васильевич хмурился и глядел в сторону, она «все время жила как пьяная от счастья».

Я думаю, читать А. Толстого легко, потому что писатель ясно видел своих героев, знал о них все, чувствовал все, что чувствуют они, жил среди них. Продуманы во всех деталях характеры, биографии, внешности. И потому с такой объемностью и вместе с тем лаконично выписаны у него люди, получившие приказ защищать мост: «Живыми отсюда не уйдем.» Тяжело читать описание боя, когда «воздух выл и визжал», «от грохота дурели люди». Но мастерство писателя таково, что веришь, если полковой командир сказал: «Нужно умереть, товарищи,»- то они умрут, но задание выполнят и мост от белых освободят. Изобразительная сила Толстого огромна. Он заставляет нас физически видеть читаемое: несущийся в бой эскадрон, гривы, согнутые спины, сверкающие клинки: «Горячо пели пули. Ольга Вячеславовна мчалась по щелястым доскам над головокружительной высотой. Вслед за Зотовой загудели, затряслись железные переплеты моста, заревело полтораста глоток». Ее подобрали в поле сильно раненную в бедро и за подвиг наградили золотой брошью, подтверждая непоколебимость духа и отвагу женщины.
Слово А.Н. Толстого было живым и талантливым, как и он сам. Поэтому начало четвертой главы поражает своей образностью и выразительностью: «Как птица, что мчится в ветреном сумасшедшем небе и вдруг с перебитыми крыльями падает клубком на землю, так вся жизнь Ольги Вячеславовны, страстная, невинная любовь оборвалась, разбилась, и потянулись ей не нужные, тяжелые и смутные дни.» Боль писателя за судьбы отдельных людей, ценность и духовное богатство которых казались несоизмеримо малыми величинами по сравнению с грандиозными задачами построения нового общества, звучит здесь в каждой строке: «Жить было тошно и мрачно…» За женщину ее мало кто признавал, была уж очень тоща и зла, как гадюка. А ведь не так давно врач в госпитале был поражен ее красотой. Рассказывая о том, как начиналась ее в двадцать два года третья жизнь, Толстой пишет, что это труднее войны, потому что ни к чему были ее ловкость, смелость, «ее гадючья злость». Теперь оставалось только сходить с ума: «Ведь гирькой второй раз уже не стукнут, не расстреляют в подвале, он не вынесет ее на руках, не сядет у койки, не пообещает сапожки с убитого гимназиста…» А.Н. Толстой глубоко воплощался в своих героев, страдал вместе с ними и заставляет страдать нас. Глубокий драматизм заключен в словах: «У нее было чувство воробья, залетевшего в тысячеколесный механизм башенных курантов. Она поджала хвост.» Ольга Вячеславовна хотела жить и работать, но на этом этапе развития общества от человека требовалось другое: предприимчивость, бездумность, приспособленчество. В результате она оказалась лишней, одинокой, ненужной. В этом и заключена ее трагедия: «Одна, одна в дикой, враждебной жизни, одинока, как в минуту смерти, не нужна никому…» Как слепая, Ольга Вячеславовна глядела на визжавшую Сонечку. Это была последняя капля.
В рассказе раскрылось великолепное языковое мастерство Толстого, умение психологически точно строить речь, создавать ощущение присутствия в эпохе, чувствовать глубокий драматизм, сюжетную остроту. Писатель говорил, что он не терпит лишних эпитетов, но зато пристрастен к глаголам, которые лучше всего придают динамику произведению: «Заскрипело седло, засвистал сырой ветер, глаза глядели на багровый мрак заката.»
Толстой понимал всю трагедию происходившего в России и, не боясь, ведь рассказ написан в 1928 году, показал «сгоревшие села, кровавые пятна на снегу, тысячи, тысячи трупов, как раскиданные дрова, заносимые поземкой…, недоверчивые, мрачные лица людей с неразглаженными морщинами гнева, ужаса, ненависти». В. Шкловский высоко оценил, сказав, что рассказ «Гадюка» написан без «неправдочки». В нем за каждым словом, за каждой строкой чувствуется присутствие автора, который стремится объяснить, как необходимо бережно относиться к человеку. Это свое, толстовское, в огромной степени вложил он в написанные им книги. Оттого в них так много жизнеутверждающего, так трогательны его женщины- героини. А.Н. Толстой учит нас ощущению драгоценности жизни человека. В этом проникновенность рассказа, читая его, каждый постигает главное, важное в жизни.
