Вы когда-нибудь мечтали поговорить с величайшим поэтом 19 века? Обсудить с ним творчество величайшего английского романтика Джорджа Гордона Байрона? Или гениальный психологический роман «Герой нашего времени»? Взять у него интервью? Что ж, мне это удалось.
— Вы начали писать стихи довольно рано, в возрасте четырнадцати лет. Что было источником Вашего вдохновения на тот момент?
— Меня вдохновляла народная поэзия, которую нигде больше не найти, кроме как в русских песнях. Как жалко, что у меня была мамушкой немка, а не русская, — я не слыхал сказок народных: в них, верно, больше поэзии, чем во всей французской словесности. Когда я был трех лет, то была песня, от которой я плакал: ее не могу теперь вспомнить, но уверен, что если б услыхал ее, она бы произвела прежнее действие. Ее певала мне покойная мать. Кроме того огромное влияние на меня оказывала природа. Я помню один сон; когда я был еще 8 лет, он сильно подействовал на мою душу. В те же лета я один ехал в грозу куда-то; и помню облако, которое, небольшое, как бы оторванный клочок черного плаща, быстро неслось по небу: это так живо предо мною, как будто вижу. Когда я еще мал был, я любил смотреть на луну, на разновидные облака, которые, в виде рыцарей со шлемами, теснились будто вокруг нее, полные ревности и беспокойства. В первом действии моей трагедии «Испанцы» Фернандо, говоря с любезной под балконом, говорит про луну и употребляет предыдущее про рыцарей сравнение. Особую роль в моей жизни играют синие горы Кавказа. Они взлелеяли детство мое, носили меня на своих одичалых хребтах: облаками меня одевали. Престолы природы, с которых как дым улетают громовые тучи! Часто во время зари я глядел на снега и далекие льдины утесов: они так сияли в лучах восходящего солнца, в розовый блеск одеваясь. Как я люблю бури Кавказа! Те пустынные, громкие бури, которым пещеры, как стражи ночей, отвечают. На гладком холме одинокое дерево, ветром, дождями нагнутое; иль виноградник, шумящий в ущельи; и путь неизвестный над пропастью, где, покрываясь пеной, бежит безыменная речка; выстрел нежданный, и страх после выстрела: враг ли коварный иль просто охотник… Все, все в этом крае прекрасно… Воздух там чист, как молитва ребенка, И люди, как вольные птицы, живут беззаботно…
— А что на счёт любовных мотивов, которые так или иначе звучат в Ваших ранних произведениях?
— Кто мне поверит, что я знал уже любовь, имея 10 лет от роду? Мы были большим семейством на водах Кавказских: бабушка, тетушки, кузины. К моим кузинам приходила одна дама с дочерью, девочкой лет девяти. Я ее видел там. Я не помню, хороша собою она была или нет, но ее образ и теперь еще хранится в голове моей. Он мне любезен, сам не знаю почему. Один раз, я помню, я вбежал в комнату. Она была тут и играла с кузиною в куклы: мое сердце затрепетало, ноги подкосились. Я тогда ни об чем еще не имел понятия, тем не менее это была страсть сильная, хотя ребяческая; это была истинная любовь; с тех пор я еще не любил так. О, сия минута первою беспокойства страстей до могилы будет терзать мои ум! И так рано!.. Надо мной смеялись и дразнили, ибо примечали волнение в лице. Я плакал потихоньку, без причины; желал ее видеть; а когда она приходила, я не хотел или стыдился войти в комнату. Белокурые волосы, голубые глаза быстрые, непринужденность… нет, с тех нор я ничего подобного не видал, или это мне кажется, потому что я никогда так не любил, как в тот раз. Говорят, что ранняя страсть означает душу, которая будет любить изящные искусства. Я думаю, что в такой душе много музыки.
— Данное выражение принадлежит Джорджу Гордону Байрону, о влиянии которого на Вас ходит множество слухов. Как произошло Ваше знакомство с творчеством этого великого поэта?
— Я начал учиться английскому языку по Байрону и через несколько месяцев стал свободно понимать его; читал Мура и поэтические произведения Вальтер Скотта, но свободно объясняться по-английски никогда не мог.
— Как Вы относитесь к тому, что Вас называют «Русским Байроном», сравнивая с английским поэтом-романтиком?
— Моё поэтическое рождение произошло под звездой этого великого поэта. Наша литература так бедна, что я из нее ничего не мог заимствовать. Но нет, я не Байрон, я другой! У нас одна душа, одни и те же муки. Есть один забавный факт о сходстве в жизни моей с лордом Байроном. Его матери в Шотландии предсказала старуха, что он будет великий человек и будет два раза женат. Про меня на Кавказе предсказала то же самое старуха моей Бабушке. Дай Бог, чтоб и надо мной сбылось, хотя б я был так же несчастлив, как Байрон. И кстати, на чём я остановился? Ах, да.. Мы оба поэты-романтики, нам близок образ лишнего человека, который постоянно хандрит, разочарован в жизни, но и в этом мы сильно различаемся.
— И в чём же отличие Вашего героя от «байроновского»?
— Я наделил своего героя такими чертами, как храбрость, решительность, в то время, как у Байрона он одинокий и охладевший. «Байроновский герой» это сильный индивидуалист, не принимающий законы своего общества и потому этим обществом отвергаемый. Разрыв с обществом кончается добровольным изгнанием или даже смертью, но «байроновского героя» это не смущает и не огорчает, он не дорожит жизнью и прекрасно чувствует себя вне общества.
— Встречается ли в Вашем творчестве «байроновский герой»?
— Моим первым «байроновским героем» можно считать Арсения из «Боярина Орши». Кстати, эпиграфом к этой поэме взяты строки этого великого английского поэта. Однако, повторюсь, у нас совсем разное отношение к героям. Я не даю своей оценки, предоставляя читателю право решать, кто прав, кто нет. И сделать свой выбор оказывается весьма сложно. У каждого из героев своя правда, и отстаивают свои правды они с одинаковым упорством и достоинством.
— Современники считают, что, в отличие от Байрона, в Ваших произведениях часто звучит тема патриотизма, любви к Родине. Как Вы это прокомментируете?
— Именно. Подобно Джорджу Гордону, я гонимый миром странник, но только с русскою душой. Я люблю Отчизну, но странною любовью! Меня поражает русский народ. Этот сторукий исполин, скорее перенесёт жестокость и надменность своего повелителя, чем слабость его; он желает быть наказываем — по справедливости, он согласен служить — но хочет гордиться рабством, хочет поднимать голову, чтобы смотреть на своего господина, и простит в нем скорее излишество пороков, чем недостаток добродетелей. Меня невольно поразила способность русского человека применяться к обычаям тех народов, среди которых ему случается жить.
— По замечанию критиков, в произведении «Герой нашего времени» явственно прорезается влияние Байрона и Шекспира на Ваше творчество: например, когда Печорин неожиданно даёт понять, что ему известен заговор Грушницкого с капитаном, это отсылает к «пьесе в пьесе» «Мышеловка» из шекспировской трагедии. Так вот, хотелось бы побольше поговорить про Ваш единственный завершённый роман, стоящийу истоков русской психологической прозы. Для начала: что означает название? Почему Печорин — герой?
— Название «Герой нашего времени» предложил издатель «Отечественных записок» Андрей Краевский , один из самых успешных журналистов нашего времени. Чутьё его не подвело: название сразу стало скандальным и определило отношение к роману. Слово «герой» имеет два пересекающихся значения: «человек исключительной смелости и благородства, совершающий подвиги во имя великой цели» и «центральный персонаж». «Может быть, некоторые читатели захотят узнать моё мнение о характере Печорина? — Мой ответ — заглавие этой книги. «Да это злая ирония!» — скажут они. — Не знаю». Я уклоняется от оценки: сам факт выбора такого героя, как Печорин, лежит вне «моралистической традиции предшествующей литературы».
— Печорин — уникальная личность?
— Печорин — исключительном человеке, который страдает и приносит страдания другим. Это собирательный образ, портрет, составленный из пороков всего нашего поколения, в полном их развитии. Вы мне опять скажете, что человек не может быть так дурен, а я вам скажу, что ежели вы верили возможности существования всех трагических и романтических злодеев, отчего же вы не веруете в действительность Печорина? Видно, Русь так уж сотворена, что всё в ней обновляется, кроме подобных нелепостей. Самая волшебная из волшебных сказок у нас едва ли избегнет упрёка в покушении на оскорбление личности!
-Безусловно, Вы смогли создать одного из самых живых и привлекательных героев в русской литературе: в глазах читателей его нарциссизм и любовь к манипулированию не затмевают ни глубокого ума, ни храбрости, ни сексуальности, ни честного самоанализа…
— Да, я считаю «Героя нашего времени» одним из лучших романов собственного сочинения. Но мне всего двадцать шесть, посмотрим, что будет дальше.
— Да, те самые двадцать шесть…
